Connecting WhatsApp
Connecting WhatsApp lets you reach learners where they actually read messages: session reminders, payment confirmations, certificates, and marketing campaigns. This article covers connecting your account and the difference between the two kinds of WhatsApp connection.
What you need first
Edmingle sends WhatsApp through AiSensy. You need an AiSensy account with a WhatsApp Business number already approved on their side, and two credentials from it:
- AiSensy Project Id
- AiSensy App Password
Everything to do with Meta, your WhatsApp Business Account, and your sender number is handled inside AiSensy. Edmingle never asks for a WABA ID, a phone number ID, or a callback URL.
Transactional and promotional connections
This is the distinction that causes the most confusion, so it is worth getting straight before you start.
| Transactional | Promotional | |
|---|---|---|
| Used by | System Notifications: reminders, payment confirmations, certificates | Campaigns and Workflows |
| How many | One, marked as the default | Several, named by you |
| Named | Shown as Transactional | You give it an Integration Name |
Your first connection is the transactional one. Add more accounts if you want marketing traffic going through a separate AiSensy project.
You can have up to 5 WhatsApp accounts in total. The + Add account option disappears once you reach the limit.
Connect your account
- Go to Settings → Apps and open the Notifications tab.
- Find the Notifications - WhatsApp section and click Connect on the WhatsApp card.
- Fill in:
- Integration Name: only for additional accounts. The transactional default does not have this field.
- AiSensy Project Id
- AiSensy App Password
- Click Save.
Edmingle checks the credentials against AiSensy as you save. If they are wrong you will see "Invalid AiSensy credentials provided." rather than a saved-but-broken connection.
On success you will see an Integration Successful window confirming the connection, with a link to the setup guide.
Turn WhatsApp on
Connecting is not the same as switching it on. The global channel switch is separate.
- Go to Settings → System Notifications.
- Click Manage Notifications.
- Turn on the WhatsApp switch and click Update.
The WhatsApp switch stays disabled until a transactional connection exists. If it is greyed out you will see: "WhatsApp isn't connected to your account yet. Click here to add your provider credentials and start sending notifications to learners via WhatsApp."
After adding a promotional account, go back and check the global WhatsApp switch in Manage Notifications. Saving a promotional integration can switch it off, which silently stops your transactional WhatsApp notifications.
Adding more accounts
In the same WhatsApp setup window, use + Add account on the left, give it an Integration Name, and enter the credentials for that AiSensy project. Accounts you add this way are promotional, and they are what you pick from when building a template for Campaigns or Workflows.
Disconnecting
There are two different removals, and they do different things.
Disconnect on the WhatsApp card stops transactional WhatsApp:
"Warning! Disabling WhatsApp integration will stop all transactional WhatsApp notifications being sent currently. Are you sure you want to disconnect this integration?"
The confirm button is Deactivate.
Delete this account inside the setup window removes one of your extra accounts:
"All notifications promotional being sent using this integration will be stopped." "If you are using Campaigns and Workflows, please ensure no templates are mapped to this integration."
Check your templates before deleting an account. Templates are tied to a specific WhatsApp integration, and removing the account they point at breaks them.
What's next
Before you can send anything, you need an approved template. Continue to WhatsApp Templates.
